Joint Project of International Marriage and Labor Migration in Asia and the Pacific Region

Joint Project of International Marriage and Labor Migration in Asia and the Pacific Region

  • Supported by Statistics Korea, the Asia Pacific Population Institute (APPI) carried out a joint research project on international marriage and labor migration in the Asia-Pacific region. The aim of the joint project was to more fully understand the diversity of population change, including imbalances in the size of women and men at marriageable ages as well as replacement labor migration due to the relative abundance or shortage in the working-age population. Four Asian countries experiencing a high rate of work or marriage migration (Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Republic of Korea) participated in the project. The participating countries were encouraged to discover a new information regarding cross-border marriage and labor migration using data from population censuses, household surveys, and administrative sources during the project. Each team wrote a country paper and the APPI wrote the background paper. The research results, including country papers and background paper, were presented at the workshop on 26-27 November 2015 in Daejeon, Korea. They were also published as APPI Working Paper series in 2016. Find more information about the APPI Working Paper series at Working papers.
