We are pleased to announce the winners of the “KOSTAT-UNFPA Summer Seminar on Population – Best Essay Contest 2024" hosted by Statistics Korea (KOSTAT) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The contest, which called for submissions in October, aimed to highlight over a decade of achievements from the Summer Seminar on Population and to gather exemplary cases that demonstrate the program’s impact in the field of poulations statistics.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the winners’ outstanding essays, which exemplify the spirit of effective implementation and knowledge dissemination that we aim to promote through this initiative. We also want to thank all participants for your valuable contributions. Your efforts insharing success stories and insights play a crucial role in advancing the population statistics. Mr. Dendi Handiyatmo

Winner Profile

  • My name is Dendi Handiyatmo. I am a senior statistician with experiences in various roles, including as a lecturer for office statistics courses and in the provincial statistics office, where I focused on field data collection. Currently, I work at BPS-Statistics Indonesia in the Directorate of Population and Labor Statistics, based in Jakarta. I hold a master’s degree in Population and Labor Studies from the University of Indonesia (2009) and a bachelor’s degree in Statistics from the Jakarta Statistics Institute (2001)

Dr. Shobhit Srivastava

Winner Profile

  • I currently serve as a Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist with an international NGO. I hold a PhD in Population Studies from the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai. My expertise includes developing theories of change and publishingscholarly articles. To date, I have authored over 150 research papers in international peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, I am proud to be an Early Career Fellow with Family Planning 2030 (FP 2030, USA).

Winner Profile

  • My name is Na-Young Yoon, and I am a PhD student at Seoul National University, majoring in public health policy. My research interests focus on family health, with a particular emphasis on fertility and caregiving. I am passionate about exploring how resources are distributed within families, and how these impact the health status of family members. In the future, through my research, I hope to contribute to the development of better public health policies in Korea.

Ms. Diksha Rani

Winner Profile

  • My name is Diksha Rani, and I am a doctoral fellow at the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai. My work focuses on child nutrition and anthropometric failure indicators in India. I hold a Bachelor's in Geography from Patna Women’s College, Patna University, where my interest in demography was sparked. I later earned a Master's in Population Studies at IIPS, Mumbai, and I am currently conducting my PhD research under the supervision of Dr. H. Lhungdim.

Dr. Ilgi Bozdag

Winner Profile

  • My name is Ilgi, and I was born in Istanbul, Turkey. Over the past decade, I have lived and worked in various countries, gaining diverse international experience. I hold a PhD from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, where my research focused on refugee demographics. In addition to my academic background, I have the last 8 years working in the humanitarian sector. My experience includes roles with international NGOs and the World Food Programme (WFP). For the past three years, I have been serving as a Statistics and Data Analysis Officer with UNHCR, leading data analysis efforts within the Global Survey Team.
