The 2026 MODS–UNFPA Summer Seminar on Population will consist of three consecutive one-week courses, delivered in person with hands-on exercises. 1. Registration Schedule Registration will open in mid-April 2026 and remain open for approximately four weeks, until early May 2026. The application form will be available on this website from 13 April 2026. Interested applicants are kindly asked to check the website for updates and submit their application during the registration period. 2. Entry Criteria Applicants are expected to meet the following criteria: - A relevant academic or professional background related to the course topic(s) - Ability to engage with graduate-level course content - All courses will be conducted in person and will include hands-on exercises using R; a basic working knowledge of R is recommended 3. Course Overview (2026) (Week 1) Workshop 1: How Do We Measure Fertility? Demographic Methods and Approaches - Lecturer: Edith Gray, Ph.D. (Professor, School of Demography, Australian National University) - Dates: June 29 (Mon) – July 3 (Fri), 2026 - Venue: Jongno-gu, Seoul - Sessions: (1) Introduction to fertility measures with R (2) Calculating and visualizing period fertility measures (3) Analyzing cohort fertility (4) Parity measures and fertility dynamics (5) Fertility futures (Week 2) Workshop 2: Analysis of Demographic Data with GIS - Lecturer: Seong-Yun Hong, Ph.D. (Professor, Department of Geography, Kyung Hee University) - Dates: July 6 (Mon) – July 10 (Fri), 2026 - Venue: Data and Statistics Human Resources Development Institute (Seo-gu, Daejeon) - Sessions: (1) Introduction to spatial data and GIS (2) Mapping population data (3) Concept of spatial autocorrelation (4) Hot spot analysis using GeoDa and R (5) Measuring population segregation (Week 3) Workshop 3: Event History Analysis - Lecturer: Scott Yabiku, Ph.D. (Professor, Department of Sociology and Criminology, Pennsylvania State University) - Dates: July 13 (Mon) – July 16 (Thu), 2026 - Venue: Data and Statistics Human Resources Development Institute (Seo-gu, Daejeon) - Sessions: (1) Basic Concepts, Data Structures, and Relationship to Life Tables; Kaplan–Meier Method (2) Cox Models (3) Parametric Models (4) Discrete-time Models 4. Language and Format All courses will be conducted in English and will include hands-on training, with a total of 25 hours per course. 5. Participation Fee Participation is free of charge.
